Whoa-- It's not what you think. I'm not talking about offing Matt Forte, Jay Cutler, or any other
under performer.
We're talking about strategy. Every advantage you can get - within the rules, of course.
If you have a difficult lineup decision to make (one that
involves dropping a player outright) think twice about your timing. If it's a tough choice, chances are other
owners may look at your castoff as an upgrade.
Let's say your team has an excess of quality running backs
and you need to waive one of them to make room for a replacement tight end. If
you're playing a team that is thin at RB, they might claim your scraps to use
against your squad. If they don't have
a need, it’s possible a division rival is aching to pick up whomever you drop.
What to do? Kill the
running back. Waive him at the last
possible moment (say 2 minutes before your lineup deadline) so your opponents
don't have time to claim him. Plus, you
have the opportunity to possibly claim the player during the waiver wire.
Of course, there will be situations where you "can't
wait," and that's fine. But, I
encounter this type of scenario several times per year, so it's good knowledge
to pass along.
