FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT
June 4, 2008
CATCHERS - Jorge Posada is set to be activated this week. He’s still not out of the woods with the shoulder injury, closely monitor his health. After a 1 for 16 stretch, Yadier Molina is 8 for his last 19. Since May 23, Rod Barajas raised his batting average 30 points to .303. He’s a career .243 hitter, never batting over .254 in a season. The other Toronto backstop, Gregg Zaun, was placed on the 15 day DL May 28.
FIRST BASE - Jason Giambi is batting.253 & he’s belted 11 HRs. If healthy, you’ll get the power but it will likely cost you some average. Daric Barton's average slipped from .271 on May 1 to .213 on May 30. June is off to a better start, but he's relegated to AL only leagues as a low-end CI for now. Tampa Bay placed Carlos Pena on the 15 day DL with a fractured finger. Eric Hinske will move to 1B & get ABs along with Willy Aybar. Conor Jackson sat out several games with a sore quad. So far, Arizona isn’t indicating a DL trip.
SECOND BASE - Alexei Ramírez is hot, raising his slugging percentage to .415 from .300 over the past 2 weeks. Considering the constant drama in Chicago, he may replace Cabrera in the leadoff spot. Minnesota's Alexi Casilla has a 7 game hitting streak and a season average of .323. Both players can help at the MI slot in AL leagues, just monitor for mixed leagues.
THIRD BASE - Mike Lamb finally started to heat up, raising his average from .218 to .250 over the past 2 weeks. Carlos Guillen is battling a bad case of hemorrhoids. Leyland moved him to left field while Inge started at third. The move to the outfield won't stick, just hope Guillen gets better, and try not to laugh. Kevin Kouzmanoff recently posted a nice streak of 9 for 21 (.321 AVE) with 3 HRs, before hitting into a triple & double play in an 0 for 6 effort against the Giants. Even though he plays in spacious Petco, Kouzmanoff can emerge a cost effective third base option for fantasy owners in mixed leagues. Ryan Zimmerman will be placed on the 15 day DL. Aaron Boone’s playing time will increase, he’s only a NL only fantasy player.
SHORTSTOP - Maicer Izturis is 10 for his last 25 (.480). He has 6 HRs & 7 SBs and qualifies at multiple positions. Tony Pena is batting .156 and the Royals are considering Esteban German - stay away. Another Angels shortstop, Sean Rodriguez, is hitting .185. June has been kinder to Rodriguez, but don't expect significant fantasy production.
OUTFIELD - Brad Wilkerson is 10 for his last 24. He may qualify at 1B in your league, slightly increasing his value. Randy Winn is batting .298 with 5 HRs & 10 SBs. He’s been running regularly, his season high was 27 in 2002. Carlos Gomez only has 2 SBs over the past 23 games. Michael Cuddyer is 11 for his last 30 (.367). He hasn’t been a fantasy producer this year, but it’s a step in the right direction. Rick Ankiel is missing time with a knee infection.
STARTING PITCHERS - Homer Bailey is scheduled to pitch this week against the Phillies. It's a tough way to start 2008 in the big leagues, but Bailey has a ton of sleeper potential. Owners in all formats should acquire him & hope he matures from last year's disappointing debut. Jesse Litsch pitched in 2 games totaling 16 scoreless innings, that's plenty good enough to slot him into mixed league rotations. Atlanta's Jorge Campillo is 2-0 with a 0.99 ERA. He's experienced blister problems but managed an impressive ratio of 33 K's to 5 walks. Campillo warrants attention from NL owners, mixed leaguers can look to him for spot starts until he cools down. Expect the stats to come back to earth. Another reliever turned starter, Seth McClung, was tagged for 6 ER in his last start. In contrast to Campillo, McClung's sports a 25 K/19 BB ratio, making him far less attractive. After an atrocious April (1-4, 7.81 ERA), Gil Meche went 2-3 in May with a 3.65 ERA. Eric Bedard got roughed up against the Yankees giving up 9 ER in 4.1 IP, but bounced back nicely with 7 shutout innings against the Red Sox. The Mariners are such a poor team, so Bedard's win total will struggle.
RELIEF PITCHERS - Trevor Hoffman coughed up a lead against the Giants for his 4th blown save on the season. He barely used his changeup, and just isn't the same pitcher he was in the past. The Padre legend will have every chance possible to retain the closer duties. He’ll post the saves, but the ERA will be higher than normal. John Smoltz won’t return to the bullpen after all. He will undergo season/possibly career ending surgery. Mike Gonzalez is on a rehab assignment, Atlanta expects him back soon.
