FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT
May 28, 2008
CATCHERS - Ryan Doumit thinks he can return from the disabled list sooner than expected. He hit .350 in 103 ABs before being sidelined. Josh Bard's run in with Albert Pujols resulted in a high ankle sprain for Bard and a trip to the 15 day DL. Bengie Molina raised his average from .273 to .339 since May 17. He’s one of the few power hitters on the Giants and is benefiting greatly from the cleanup slot.
FIRST BASE - The Mariners are starting to use Miguel Cairo at first base more and more as Richie Sexson continues to struggle. Kevin Youkilis has a sore right hand, but the x-rays were negative. Mark Teixeira hit only 1 HR in this month. It’s been his worst May since 2004, but he should still find the power stroke soon.
SECOND BASE - Felipe López is 3 for his last 20 posting a .150 AVE. With only 4 SBs on the season, Lopez is offering little fantasy value at the moment. Mark Grudzielanek is in the middle of a bad slump - 2 for 22, .091 AVE. He hasn’t hit a homerun this season, so if there is no batting average, he can’t be considered beyond AL only leagues.
THIRD BASE - The Brewers recalled third baseman Russell Branyan to help spell the struggling Bill Hall. Don't be surprised if this turns into a platoon. After indicating a return was near, the Dodgers placed Nomar Garciaparra on the 60 day disabled list. It's for the best; Andy LaRoche is the better option for fantasy owners & the Dodgers. NL owners may want to stash LaRoche before he is officially recalled. After a 0 for 14 clip, Melvin Mora pounded HRs in back-to-back games.
SHORTSTOP - The pair of New York shortstops have been on divergent paths as of late. Derek Jeter is 1 for his last 21, while Jose Reyes is batting .333 during his 13 game hitting streak. Freddie Bynum hasn’t displayed the speed yet. He has 0 SBs and is batting .182 in his last 21 ABs. David Eckstein returned from the DL this week.
OUTFIELD - The Rockies will use Seth Smith and Scott Podsednik after placing Matt Holliday on the 15 day DL. Smith batted .321 with 6 HRs in Colorado Springs this year. NL leaguers should keep an eye on him. Heralded rookie Jay Bruce was called up by the Reds this week. Outfield is such a deep fantasy position, but he has the chance to be this year's Hunter Pence. NL owners and large mixed leaguers need to grab Bruce. After hitting 5 HRs in April, Melky Cabrera has only 1 in May. His batting average also dropped from .299 to .249. The Rangers' David Murphy isn't quite a fantasy superstar, but AL only owners can find value in the .286 AVE, 6 HRs, & 4 SBs. Jayson Werth struggled a bit before being placed on the DL with a strained oblique. At 9 HRs & 7 SBs, he still bears attention in NL only leagues when he returns.
STARTING PITCHERS - Aaron Laffey pitched in 3 straight games going 7 innings without a run. Since then, he has still pitched well – 13 IP, 3 ER (2.08 ERA). Laffey will stick after Jake Westbrook returns, especially with Fausto Carmona on the DL. Justin Duchscherer pitched a 1 hitter against the Red Sox. His career high in innings pitched is 96; he’s already at 41.2. After posting 17 losses in 2007, Jose Contreras is off to a fantastic start – (5-3, 3.06 ERA, 1.05 WHIP). He won’t stay at this pace, but he can provide some fantasy help in the meantime. Pedro Martinez is set to return next week. Owners will see him eased in, as he faces the Giants for his first start.
RELIEF PITCHERS - CJ Wilson got roughed up a bit earlier in the month, but has allowed 1 ER in his last 5 IP. Eric Gagne believes that he won't need the full 15 days to recover from shoulder stiffness. Salomon Torres seems to be the favorite over Mota at this point. Giants reliever Alex Hinshaw struck out 8 batters in 3.2 innings of work. Brian Wilson still has the job, but it's worth noting that Hinshaw had 7 saves in Fresno before being called up.
