| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| May 20, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - After 2 weeks, Jeff Clement was sent down to Triple-A. He should return sometime in 2008 since Jose Vidro is hardly a long-term option. Kenji Johjima went 11 for 26 (.423) last week before slipping a bit going 0 for his last 8. Michael Barrett is set to begin a rehab assignment. Josh Bard is batting .202 on the season. John Buck missed the weekend games due to the birth of his baby. Miguel Olivo is 8 for his last 23 (.348). |
| FIRST BASE - Nick Johnson will be placed on the DL for 4-6 weeks. The Nationals activated Dmitri Young and Aaron Boone should pick up some more starts at 1B. Ryan Howard hit .313. with 3 HRs over the past week. The .191 season average should be increasing shortly. Lance Berkman, the hottest hitter on the planet, compiled a 17 game streak. Mike Jacobs blasted 11 HRs on the season so far, but is only hitting .194 against lefties.
| SECOND BASE - After an unbelievable stretch, Chase Utley is hitting .140 last 12 games. Mark Ellis has missed several games with a strained hamstring. Gregorio Petit picked up a couple starts, going 3 for 8 in 2 games. Ray Durham has 10 hits in his last 23 ABs. It's very hard to rely on him because of his durability, but it is a contract year after all. Jeff Kent continues to slump, batting .133 in his last 15 ABs. In the offseason, he indicated numerous times that 2008 might be his last year. |
| THIRD BASE - The Rangers will use Hank Blalock at first base, rather than third, when he returns from the DL. For fantasy purposes, he has more value at the hot corner. Troy Glaus is 14 for his last 34 (.412). He only has 2 HRs on the season, but managed to rack up 28 RBI. Eric Chavez is in the middle of a rehab stint that should last through May. His replacement, Jack Hannahan, has hit a poor .230 for the A's this year. Alex Rodriguez is on pace to return 5/20. Chad Tracy performed well in his last few rehab games. Mark Reynolds will stick, but Tracy will eat some playing time until he gets hurt again.
| SHORTSTOP - Orlando Cabrera blasted a couple HRs against the Giants over the weekend. You can't quite declare the slump over, but at least it's a step in the right direction. After a brief hot streak, Edgar Renteria has seen his batting average drop 40 points to .263. Rafael Furcal might return this Friday. Nothing is final, so watch out in case there is a setback. Khalil Greene is batting .220 with 3 HRs. Another season totaling over 25 HRs may be out of reach, but he can still finish with 15. Owners will have accept a below-par average though. |
| OUTFIELD - Eric Byrnes has been in a season long slump. Reports have him battling hamstring problems. Josh Hamilton missed a game because of exhaustion, but returned the next day. A league leading 50 RBI takes a lot out of you. Austin Kearns is day-to-day with a strained elbow. He's batting a paltry .167. Andruw Jones is experiencing knee soreness, he'll be out of the lineup for a couple days at least. Carlos Beltran has hit safely in 12 of his last 15 games, raising his average from .204 to .252. The Marlins signed Jacque Jones. It’ll take him a few minor league games to get back into playing shape. Ryan Ludwick has 4 HRs in 3 games. His season total in now at 12. Rick Ankiel missed a couple of games with a hurt shoulder. He still believes a DL trip won’t happen, but monitor the situation. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - John Lackey returned from an extended DL trip and pitched 7 innings of 1 run ball against the White Sox. Owners who stashed him on the bench for April will be rewarded for their patience. Clay Buchholz landed on the DL with a torn fingernail. Bartolo Colon will pick up the spot in the rotation. Another Red Sox pitcher, Jon Lester, threw a no-hitter late Monday night. After beginning the season in a rut, he lowered his ERA from 5.40 to 3.41 in May. Derek Lowe has been crushed in his last 4 starts. Perhaps there is something more substantial to his elbow problems. Jake Peavy will be placed on the DL. After a dismal start, the last place Padres will be extra careful with him. |
| RELIEF PITCHERS - Jon Rauch hasn't allowed a run in his last 12 relief appearances. CJ. Wilson has given up 7 runs in his last 4.2 IP. Eddie Guardado & Joaquin Benoit would be primary options if the Rangers yank the closer's role from Wilson. Scott Downs emerged as Toronto's closer option when they want to rest BJ Ryan. He hasn't allowed a run during 7 IP in May. Cleveland anticipates Joe Borkowski to return after a very short rehab. Rafael Betancourt didn’t make the best of his closer audition. |
