| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| April 29, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - After returning for a pinch-hit triple on Saturday, Jorge Posada had a set back and will be placed on the 15 day DL. Jose Molina will get the bulk of starts until his return. Jarrod Saltalamacchia was recalled from the minors. He’ll chip away some at Gerald Laird’s playing time, but both should find their way into the lineup. Víctor Martínez is hitting .365, but still is without a homer. As the weather heats up, the pop should come back. Mike Rabelo and Dioner Navarro have started the majority of the time since their return from injuries. Both only have value in NL only & AL only leagues, respectively. |
| FIRST BASE - Ryan Garko is in the midst of a terrible slump. Cleveland has the option to move Casey Blake or Victor Martinez to first base to give Garko a break or two to regain his early season form. Lance Berkman earned NL Player of the week honors belting 4 HRs & 12 RBI, the 4 SBs on the season is just icing on the cake. Carlos Delgado is batting just .194 in 2008. NL leaguers have to keep him, but on the bench for now. Jason Giambi’s 5 HRs are fine, but the .171 AVE should keep him out of mixed league discussions at the present time. |
| SECOND BASE - Colorado will option Jayson Nix down to the minors. With Jeff Baker & Troy Tulowitzki hurting, Omar Quintanilla is the likely call up. Felipe Lopez has the starting spot over Ronnie Belliard. He’ll always get you some steals, it’s more of a question if he can keep the job. Luis Castillo stole 3 bases over the past week bringing his season total to 6. He barely has value in NL leagues as a middle infielder. Jose Lopez had an impressive week and is in the middle of a 9 game hit streak. Mixed leaguers can use him while he’s hot. |
| THIRD BASE - Jorge Cantu has been slumping a bit, but his average remains around .300. He’s not an option in mixed leagues now, but NL only league owners can slot him in as a corner infielder. After aggravating his quad, Alex Rodriguez is DL bound. Morgan Ensberg will fill in & Wilson Betemit just started a rehab assignment. Scott Rolen will return from his broken finger. His trade counterpart, Troy Glaus, said he was experiencing blurry vision during night games - no problems during the day. Garrett Atkins posted a hot week, leading to a season average at .330 along with 6 HRs. He started awfully slow last year, it’s an encouraging sign. |
| SHORTSTOP - Age issues aside, Miguel Tejada is on a tear. Ever since the negative backlash against ESPN’s expose’, Tejada has exploded – he’s 17 for his last 42 ABs (.404 AVE). J.J. Hardy picked it up over the past several days hitting around .300, but he still hasn’t shown the power he had in 2007. Last year, Hardy hit 9 of 26 HRs in May. Yuniesky Betancourt has compiled 17 runs. If he can somehow get to the double-digit level in HRs & SBs, he can become more than an AL only option. |
| OUTFIELD - Alfonso Soriano is on track to return May 1. Grady Sizemore missed a few games with a strained hamstring, but was available to pinch-hit. Shane Victorino is set to be activated this week. Jason Werth filled in admirably, so you may see him steal a few ABs from Geoff Jenkins & Victorino. Charlie Manuel likes to rest Victorino regularly, so Werth can provide an option in NL leagues. Carlos Gomez missed a couple of games with a calf strain, a DL visit isn’t expected. Curtis Granderson returned from the DL this week. He’s a stat machine, might as well get him in there and hope he works the rust off quickly. Jack Cust has struggled, hitting .169 with only 1 HR. Owners should keep him on the bench for now. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - Dontrelle Willis is due to begin a minor league rehab assignment . It’s hard to demote Armando Galarraga (18 IP, 1.50 ERA, 2-0), so Detroit can take their time on Willis’ return. John Smoltz apparently had been experiencing pain since the Spring. He’ll be on the 15 day DL. Atlanta has options - Jo Jo Reyes, Mike Hampton, or Chuck James, none of which should get much attention from mixed league owners. Brett Myers admitted that his fastball tops off at 88-90 mph, down from his low to mid 90s. He faces the Giants next time out. If he gets lit up against a sub-par lineup, there is cause for concern. Matt Garza and Scott Kazmir are scheduled to return this week. It remains to be seen who will be out of the Rays’ rotation. |
| RELIEF PITCHERS - The Giants demoted Barry Zito to the bullpen in hopes that he can work out his troubles. He has no fantasy value at this point. Hot prospect Max Scherzer is due to arrive in Arizona and work out of the bullpen, initially. If he lives up to the billing, the Diamondbacks can find room for him in the rotation somewhere. Troy Percival still has his doubters, but he hasn’t allowed a run this year on his way to 5 saves. Jason Isringhausen has given up 8 earned runs in his last 5 IP. Keep on eye out to make sure it’s just a rough patch & not an injury. |
