| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| April 22, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - Paul Lo Duca will hit the DL due to his swollen hand. Johnny Estrada is still hurting himself, and will share time with Wil Nieves. Chris Ianetta had 5 hits in his last 12 ABs, but will remain in a platoon with Yorvit Torrealba. Jorge Posada made appearances DH and 1B while nursing his arm injury. He should be back behind the dish soon. |
| FIRST BASE - Carlos Pena has been experiencing a bad hamstring and is batting below .200. Conor Jackson is 10 for his last 25 for a season average of .361. He’s making tremendous progress on reaching his potential of 20 HRs & a 300 + AVE. Joey Votto started several games in a row and responded by going 9 for 24 (.375) and hitting 3 HRs. He warrants mixed league consideration if he wins the regular gig over Scott Hatteberg. Casey Kotchman's eight-game streak with at least one RBI came to an end. He’s batting .315 with 5 HRs on the season, so mixed leaguers can find some value from him at the corner spot. |
| SECOND BASE - Brandon Phillips has been in a terrible slump causing Dusty Baker to shift him around in the lineup. Phillips is a free swinger (109 K’s in 2007), so owners have to expect some thin production at times. Ian Kinsler stole 3 bases last week and hit his first homerun of the season. At 6 SBs on the year already, he appears poised to top the 23 SBs he had in 2007. Clint Barmes is hitting .375 on the season and has been getting the bulk of the time starting at second base. NL leaguers can contemplate adding Barmes as a middle infielder, but mixed leaguers should sit on the sidelines. |
| THIRD BASE - A sore quad and pregnant wife has kept A-Rod out of the lineup for the past few days. Both issues should resolve themselves soon. Chipper Jones lit up the week, going long 2 times in back-to-back games. He’s now listed as day-to-day with a strained quad, fantasy owners need to expect this behavior all season long. Hank Blalock was bothered by his back, but seems fine in the midst of a 8 game hit-streak. Detroit is contemplating a position switch by moving Carlos Guillen to 3B & Miguel Cabrera to 1B. Guillen qualifies as a SS, so that’s where fantasy owners should keep him. |
| SHORTSTOP - After aggravating his ankle injury, Jimmy Rollins was sent to the DL, he’s eligible to return May 5. The Giants called up Manny Burriss after waiving Raj Davis. Burriss stole 68 bases in the minors last year. Alex Cora’s injured elbow landed him on the DL effective April 10, he should return when eligible. Edgar Renteria posted a great line last week (.464 AVE, 3 HR , 10 RBI), it was just a matter of time before he began to adjust to his new surroundings. Ryan Theriot’s bat woke up going 11 for his last 23. However, back stiffness has kept him out of the lineup over the past few games. Ronny Cedeno has been filling in & is batting .345 with 13 RBI, 10 runs on the season. |
| OUTFIELD - Corey Patterson has slowed quite a bit and will continue to lose at bats to Jerry Hairston Jr & Ryan Freel. Two Red Sox outfielders headed the weekly leader board. Manny Ramirez finally broke out of his season slump last week hitting .421 AVE, 3 HRs, 6 RBI. Further making his case for playing time, rookie Jacoby Ellsbury posted 11 runs and 6 steals. NL leaguers should take notice of Skip Schumaker. He’s among the league leaders in runs and is earning plenty of playing time. Emil Brown has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games. AL only owners can use him for now, but a repeat of his 2005 career year is uncertain.. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - The Mariners are looking for Erik Bedard to return 4/26. Seattle will likely limit his pitch count in his first outing. Cliff Lee has pitched like the 2005 version. Mixed leaguers have to acquire him for that sleeper potential. Phil Hughes is 0-3 with a 8.82 ERA. He’s got some tough matchups over the next two weeks against Chicago & Detroit. Braden Looper had a fast start last year (3-1, 1.91 ERA), don’t have too high of expectations for him. Oliver Perez got blown up against the Brewers (4.1 IP, 6 ER), but settled down nicely in Philadelphia on Saturday. He has 21 K’s in 21.2 IP and a competitive team, fantasy stats will follow. Joe Saunders is 3-0 with a 2.15 ERA. You can’t guarantee mixed league success quite yet, but he has AL only value. |
| RELIEF PITCHERS - JJ Putz is scheduled to be activated midweek. Peter Moylan might be done for the year, Manny Acosta will get more opportunities to close until Rafael Soriano returns He’s anticipated back on May 1. Joe Borowski pitched terribly this year and landed on the DL Rafael Betancourt will fill in as closer. Even though Eric Wedge remains publicly committed to Borowski, sheer performance is bound to change his mind. Chad Cordero still appears hurt. Last week’s recommendation said that you should keep Joe Rauch, and that still holds true until things clear up. |
