FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT
April 14, 2008
CATCHERS - Brian McCann had a scorching hot week and ranks among the offensive leaders for all catchers. Bengie Molina is one of the few Giants hitters worthy of mixed league attention. He will sport an average between .270-.280 and should sniff 20 HRs. After a slow beginning, Geovany Soto now has is average around .270, there’s still a chance he can emerge as a mixed league starter. Iván Rodríguez continues to sputter along. You can’t cut him outright, but he should be benched for the time being.
FIRST BASE - Lance Berkman hit 3 HRs over the past week. Quietly, Adrián González has positioned himself among the elite fantasy first basemen. A fantastic average and 30 HR potential looks like a lock. Ryan Garko reached base safely in every game this year for an OBP of .460. Thankfully, the Victor Martinez injury didn’t cause him to lose any playing time at first base. James Loney accumulated a .400 average in these early stages. Obviously, that will come down, but he appears primed to bust out in a big way this season.
SECOND BASE - Orlando Hudson compiled 6 runs and 7 RBI over the past week. So far, he is showing no ill effects from last year’s freak injury. Aaron Hill is off to a nice start hitting .349. He hit exactly .291 over the past 2 seasons. A shoulder injury has been plaguing Freddy Sánchez, he’s 2 for last 23. Keep on the bench until he turns things around a bit. Tadahito Iguchi is 9 for his last 30 bringing his season average to .300, but with a terrible OPS of .687.
THIRD BASE - Mike Lowell was placed on the DL with a thumb injury. Kevin Youkilis slides over to third, with Sean Casey at first. Casey possesses a decent average & OBP, but not much of anything else. Alex Gordon is 11 for his last 26, responding well to the drop in the Royals lineup. Evan Longoria is batting .333 since being called up. It’s hard to sort through the hype, but you have a fantastic prospect in Longoria. Mixed leaguers have the blessing to get him in the lineup as a corner infielder.
SHORTSTOP - Injuries-galore have effected many key shortstops. Jimmy Rollins missed several games with a sprained ankle, but anticipates returning soon. José Reyes has been battling a strained hamstring; he is 3 for his last 22. The Mets are unsure about a stint on the DL. Carlos Guillén also strained his hamstring. At this point, a DL visit isn’t expected. Troy Tulowitzki posted a season batting average of .159. He started slow last year, batting .244 in April.
OUTFIELD - Eric Byrnes ranks among the weekly leaders. Another 50 SBs is tough to see, but he’ll still rack up the fantasy stats. A pair of youngsters have benefited from Dave Roberts landing on the DL. Fred Lewis is 7 for his last 13, with 5 doubles. John Bowker has a homerun in each of his first 2 games. NL owners should monitor the situation. Billy Butler has a fine .372 batting average, but now power to show for it - 0 HR, 3 RBI. Pat Burrell blasted 3 HRs over the past week on his way to a .378 season batting average. He previously had 2 seasons hitting .281 & .282, but his career average usually hovers just under .260. The stench in the LA outfield is high-priced Andrew Jones (.105 0 HR 1 RBI). It’ll be interesting to see how Torre handles this one.
STARTING PITCHERS - Todd Wellemeyer places among the league leaders in strikeouts. Owners should note, the K/IP ratio he displayed in 2008 (10.00) isn’t indicative of his past (6.83 in 2007 & 6.23 in 2006). In typical fashion, Chien-Ming Wang was ultra-efficient in his first 3 starts, pitching a complete game 2 hitter against the Red Sox last time out. Roy Halladay averaged 8 IP per start this season. He’s always been an innings-eater, there’s something to be said for predictability. Kyle Lohse allowed only 2 runs in 17.1 IP. The 1.04 ERA will certainly rise, but the 3 solid outings are encouraging. Gavin Floyd recently pitched 7 1/3 innings of no hit ball while the Giants Matt Cain pitched 6 innings without allowing a hit. There’s not much surprise with Cain, but Floyd’s hot start can temporarily help out pitching deficient AL only teams.
RELIEF PITCHERS - Jose Valverde allowed an earned run in 3 of 5 outings, and at least 1 hit every time out. Valverde is notoriously erratic, and there’s no Lidge, Wheeler, or Qualls for Houston to turn to. Jeremy Accardo’s recent struggles will cause the Blue Jays to throw BJ Ryan back into regular duty sooner than expected. Peter Moylan is the favorite for saves in Atlanta after Rafael Soriano landed on the DL. After a horrible first outing, Matt Capps has pitched in 5 straight without allowing a run.
