September 10, 2008
CATCHERS - Kurt Suzuki is batting .371 over his last 10 games. He hasn't hit any homeruns and only has 2 RBI in that time span, but he's been a serviceable backstop. Jeff Clement will undergo knee surgery and miss the rest of the year. Keep him in mind for next year.
FIRST BASE - Paul Konerko suffered a right knee injury. Nick Swisher will slide over to first, with Griffey Jr. in centerfield. Carlos Delgado is on a tear hitting 5 HRs along with a .297 AVE. over the past 10 games. Albert Pujols revealed he is planning on Tommy John surgery. He’s still effective offensively, but it's better to get it done sooner rather than later.
SECOND BASE - Freddy Sanchez left a game due to blurred vision. He had been heating up before the injury; Luis Rivas can fill in at second. Brandon Phillips suffered a broken finger and is done for the year. Danny Richar will get a look at second base. Owners can hopefully find more stable options than Richar.
THIRD BASE - Evan Longoria is planning to take batting practice on Friday. Mike Lowell is 7 for 16 (.438) since his return from the DL. Troy Glaus has a strained rotator cuff. Glaus will miss a fair number of games or possibly the rest of the season.
SHORTSTOP - Manny Burress has a strained oblique, which will likely cause him to miss the rest of the year. Omar Vizquel and Alex Ochoa will see their playing time increase, but they present little fantasy value. Luis Rodríguez is 8 for his last 25 ABs (.320). He doesn't contribute in any other category, but he’s getting a decent amount of playing time.
OUTFIELD - Shin-Soo Choo is 18 for his last 32 ABs (.563 AVE). The Indians have a double-header on Saturday, so head-to-head owners may give him a look as they approach the home stretch. Denard Span is off to a fast start in September hitting .296 with 3 SBs. As the leadoff man for the Twins, he'll have plenty of chances to make a fantasy impact. Fred Lewis will miss the rest of the year. Rookie Nate Schierholtz is the beneficiary and can be a late season sleeper.
STARTING PITCHERS - Brandon Morrow nearly threw a no-hitter in his first start against the Yankees. He gets the Angels next time out and may be on a stricter pitch count considering the amount of pitches he threw in his last outing. His long term potential is excellent. Max Scherzer will take Yusmeiro Petit's spot in the rotation. Scherzer's breakout potential is too good for any owner to pass up. Wandy Rodriguez will miss his next start with a strained oblique.
RELIEF PITCHERS - Billy Wagner suffered a setback and elected to undergo Tommy John surgery. Luis Ayala will be given the lead role in a committee situation, but he's essentially a number 3 fantasy reliever. The Cardinals indicated that Chris Carpenter could see save opportunities. It's not the end of Chris Perez, but he may lose some save chances if Carpenter manages to stay healthy. .
