| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| September 3, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - Victor Martinez hit his first homerun since being activated. He hasn't been playing everyday, so he's not quite back into full action for mixed leaguers. Dioner Navarro missed several games with a bum leg, but plans on returning this week. Shawn Riggans will see time until Navarro can come back. Jarrod Saltalamacchia's forearm injury will cause him to miss the rest of the season. Taylor Teagarden will split time with Gerald Laird. Both are AL only players.
| FIRST BASE - Utilityman Martin Prado has filled in nicely for Casey Kotchman. Prado won't keep it up, but he can be a hot-hitting stopgap until he cools off. Billy Butler is 16 for his last 32 ABs. He isn't widely owned in mixed leagues, so he is a competent wavier wire addition.
| SECOND BASE - Jeff Kent underwent surgery and will likely miss the rest of the season. The Padres waived Tadahito Iguchi and called up Matt Antonelli. Antonelli began to heat up in the minors and will get playing time, but he's a low end NL only player right now. The change of scenery to St Louis for Felipe Lopez has fit well. He is batting .369 since becoming a Cardinal, owners in all formats can find value right now.
| THIRD BASE - The Marlins called up Dallas McPherson. He's crushed the ball in AAA & should be monitored. Omar Infante has been filling in for Chipper Jones at third base. He's sported a solid bat hitting .318 on the season. His multi-position eligibility warrants consideration in NL only leagues.
| SHORTSTOP - Troy Tulowitzki hit .277 over the past month and he still has the ability to fill a thin position. Jason Bartlett has hit safely in 8 of his past 10 games, bringing his season average to .281. He has speed, but fails to make a dent in any other category.
| OUTFIELD - Chris Dickerson has found a home at the top of Cincinnati’s lineup. He’s hitting .320 with 6 HRs & 5 SBs over 75 ABs. Mixed league owners can certainly use him. Pat Burrell has seen his average plummet to .256, down from .280 on August 1. He hit .181 in August last year. Chris Young brought his average up 10 points during August to .244. It’s still not where fantasy owners want him to be, but it’s moving in the right direction. A .250 mark on the season would be a minor victory. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - Paul Byrd has 3 consecutive wins. He landed on a better team in Boston, but he's not someone owners should rely on. Fausto Carmona is another pitcher riding a 3 game win streak. He allowed 7 runs in his last 11.2 IP, but still managed to post victories. Cliff Lee reached the 20-win mark for a team that has 67 wins on the season.
| RELIEF PITCHERS - Joey Devine pitched 8 straight scoreless innings. He may get the occasional save opportunity, but Brad Ziegler still looks like the closer. Takashi Saito plans on returning from the DL next week. Jonathan Broxton had a rough August giving up 5 runs in 9.2 IP.
