| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| August 18, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - Victor Martinez is progressing in his rehab nicely. He'll likely play most of the week in AAA before returning. Kurt Suzuki's average is now at .290, the highest it's been since April 29. Miguel Olivo was out of the lineup while he served a 4 game suspension.
| FIRST BASE - The Yankees waived Richie Sexson. That didn't last long. Some team will give Sexson another look as a platoon option. Bryan LaHair is batting .296 for the Mariners since Sexson's departure. He had 12 HRs & 81 RBI in Tacoma before being called up. Derrek Lee is 9 for his last 38 ABs (.237) and he hasn't hit a HR since July 27. There's no indication of injury, it appears to be a mini-slump.
| SECOND BASE - Ian Kinsler strained his groin and was placed on the DL. Some outlets are calling it season ending. Ramon Vazquez & Joaquin Arias will share the duty while Kinsler is out. Rickie Weeks suffered a thumb injury and calls himself day-to-day. Ronnie Belliard raised his average to .255 from his .231 mark at the All Star Break. |
| THIRD BASE - Chris Davis may see time at third base when Hank Blaylock returns. It seems odd, considering Blaylock began the season a 3B & Davis at 1B, but Blalock in nursing an arm injury. Willy Aybar is making the most of Evan Longoria's absence going 11 for 40 (.275). The Rays are hoping Longoria will return by Sept 1, that sounds a little optimistic, but possible.
| SHORTSTOP - Maicer Izturis ended his season after tearing a ligament in his thumb. Erick Aybar takes over and his increased playing time gives him consideration in AL only leagues. Stephen Drew had his 17 game hit streak broken, but bounced back with a 2 for 3 effort Sunday afternoon. His season average stands at .284 along with 14 HRs.
| OUTFIELD - The Yankees optioned Melky Cabrera to AAA. Hideki Matsui should be close to returning from the DL to help fill Cabrera's role. Marlon Byrd is 19 for his last 41 ABs (.463). In 276 ABs, he has 8 HRs & 4 SBs. Randy Winn continues his hot pace going 12 for his last 26 (.462) including 6 doubles. His counterpart, Fred Lewis, is 11 for his last 26 ABs (.423). Both may be overlooked in mixed leagues, but they can be used when hot. Reds rookie Chris Dickerson is batting .409 since his major league callup. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - Shoulder problems forced Jonathan Sanchez to the DL. In the Giants view, he's just as valuable as Matt Cain, so they'll be plenty cautious. Matt Palmer was called up to take Sanchez's spot and was promptly hammered. There's no fantasy value in the journeyman minor leaguer. The Braves lost another starting pitcher for the year after Tom Glavine landed on the DL with an elbow injury. The Dodgers placed Brad Penny on the DL and traded for Greg Maddux. Maddux loses Petco Park but goes to a better team.
| RELIEF PITCHERS - Billy Wagner didn't come off the DL on Monday. He's had a couple setbacks, so he will be examined again this week. CJ Wilson is out for the year. Eddie Guardado gets another chance to close and is best used as a number 3 fantasy reliever. Troy Percival is out again, although the Rays are planning on a return this season. Dan Wheeler's fantasy value gets a boost in the meantime.
