| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| August 10, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - The Nationals released Paul LoDuca. Washington paid him 5 million as a free agent, but they had an abundance of backstops on the roster. The Marlins promptly signed him to a minor league deal. Kelly Shoppach has been hitting well since the All Star break. He should have a prominent role even after Victor Martinez returns. Shoppach has definitely earned consideration in all formats.
| FIRST BASE - Todd Helton was placed on the 60 day DL. He's unlikely to make any fantasy impact this season. Adam LaRoche began a minor league rehab assignment. Monitor his progress because desperate owners may find a cheap CI when he returns. Joey Votto was placed on the bereavement list and the Reds called up Adam Rosales. Rosales was batting .280 in the minors this year. Bereavement list stints are usually 3 days.
| SECOND BASE - Struggling since the All Star break, Ian Kinsler finally showed some life by going 5 for 6 with a homerun. Fantasy owners are seeing signs the slump is nearing an end. Dan Uggla is still suffering ankle soreness, which is the likely cause for his post-Break downswing. The Marlins aren't talking DL, so hang in there as long as he does. Orlando Hudson is likely done for the year. Augie Ojeda and Chris Burke should be on the radar screen for NL owners. |
| THIRD BASE - With Evan Longoria sitting out, Willy Aybar belted 2 HRs. Obviously, he's not going to take Longoria's spot, unless the injury is serious. Aybar's versatility is enough to get him ABs elsewhere in the lineup. He really doesn't get noticed, but Melvin Mora raised his average to .265 and has hit 17 HRs. There's a lot worse corner infielders out there.
| SHORTSTOP - Michael Young's finger is still bothersome. He'll be hampered by the fracture for the near future. Cesar Izturis now has 14 SBs on the season. His career-high 24 SBs came with LA in 2004. Jed Lowrie had an 8 game hit streak broken. He's at .279 on the year, with little additional production. Jhonny Peralta's average sits at .276. He's come a long way to proving his fantasy value.
| OUTFIELD - Carlos Lee will be out 6-8 weeks with a broken finger. Darin Erstad & Michael Bourn will pick up the extra playing time. Bourn's wheels makes him attractive, but he'll need to get on base more to use them. Carl Crawford was placed on the 15 day DL with a sore hand. The Rays activated Rocco Baldelli who will help fill in along with Gabe Gross. Both Gross and Baldelli are intriguing options if Crawford misses significant time. Lastings Milledge has 5 HRs over the past 10 games. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - Chris Carpenter left Sunday's game with a strained triceps. The chances of Carpenter re-injuring himself were substantial, further details aren't known at the moment. Another injured Cardinal, Adam Wainwright, is apparently going to return as a reliever. Those plans may change, depending on Carpenter's status. Joe Blanton and Pat Maholm pitched in a fantastic scoreless dual over the weekend. Both pitchers have use in NL leagues and as spot starters in mixed leagues.
| RELIEF PITCHERS - With Billy Wagner on the DL, Aaron Heilman has 1 win & 2 saves over 3 2/3 scoreless innings. He's certainly a valuable handcuff for Wagner owners. JJ Putz hasn’t allowed a run in 6 appearances, but his WHIP stands at a miserable 1.89. Francisco Cordero has yielded 31 base on balls this season. He allowed a total of 34 walks in 2006 & 2007.
