FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT
August 3, 2008
CATCHERS - The Yankees acquired Ivan Rodriguez before the trade deadline. Detroit previously stated Rodriguez would see less playing time, but he forced his way into the lineup by getting hot. Being in New York should give fantasy owners a little bit more stability for the last 2 months. The casualty is Jose Molina, who will see less action. In Detroit, Brandon Inge is back behind the plate, and deserves monitoring in case he heats up.
FIRST BASE - Mark Texeira was traded to the Angels for Casey Kotchman and a minor leaguer. Texeira is after a 10-year contract, so the Angels didn't even talk extension. He'll be motivated big time, and is surrounded by a better lineup. Kotchman moves to the NL, and may struggle at first as he adjusts to the new league. The Braves will show patience, looking toward 2009.
SECOND BASE - Robinson Cano suffered a hand injury and may be lost for the season. Wilson Betemit can fill in, but the Yankees may look to a post-deadline trade for help. Manny Burriss, and Eugenio Velez will be mixed and matched in hopes that at least one is Major League quality. Manny Burriss has the best chance to emerge as an everyday starter.
THIRD BASE - Andy LaRoche landed in Pittsburgh by way of a 3-team trade. It's a great situation. He'll get a chance to play with little pressure for the rest of the year. Reuniting with his brother gives the Pirates a nice marketing angle and decent fantasy corner infielders.
SHORTSTOP - The Giants failed to trade Omar Vizquel. He’s been horrible at the plate. Journey-man Ivan Ochoa serves as one of the few options on the roster. Mike Aviles had the best week for a shortstop hitting 13 for 26 with 2 HRs & 8 runs.
OUTFIELD - The White Sox traded for Ken Griffey Jr. and plan to play him in centerfield. He's aging, so injury concerns are legitimate. The move sends Nick Swisher to first base, which will displace Paul Konerko. The Dodgers went after Manny Ramirez in a move to lock up the NL West. It can be a combustible situation , but he's essentially in a walk year, so he'll try. Jason Bay landed in Boston as a result of the Manny-deal. Bay should excel. He can pummel the Green Monster on a regular basis and Boston fans will greatly appreciate his pleasant (Canadian) demeanor over Ramirez's me-first behavior.
STARTING PITCHERS - Tim Hudson is lost for the season. The Braves will fill-in as needed, although Chuck James and Mike Hampton have yet to show any fantasy value. Chris Carpenter pitched well in his post-surgery debut. Anyone returning from such a serious injury is at risk for a relapse. But, if he's on the right track, you might as well ride him until it stops.
RELIEF PITCHERS - Kyle Farnsworth was sent to Detroit in exchange for Ivan Rodriquez. They recently stripped Todd Jones of closer duties and handed Fernando Rodney the job. Rodney is struggling, so maybe Farnsworth might get a shot. Jones wasn’t terrible, so he can certainly regain the position. Jason Isringhausen returned to the closer slot after a several week hideous. He looked good in his first outing back.
