FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT
July 26, 2008
CATCHERS - The Nationals activated Johnny Estrada, making them suddenly flush with catchers. Considering the injury plagued lineup, Paul Lo Duca made an appearance at first base & in the outfield. Ivan Rodriguez picked up the production, hitting 11 for his last 25 (.440). J.R. Towles was sent down once Humberto Quintero was activated from the DL.
FIRST BASE - Chris Davis hit his 10th HR on the season; he only has 89 at bats. Daric Barton was placed on the DL after cutting his head in the shallow end of a pool. It somewhat represents his progress in 2008. Wes Bankston was called up to take the roster spot. Adrian Gonzalez hit 2 HRs on Saturday and is hitting .351 since the All Star break. Conor Jackson continues his tear, hitting .440 with 2 HRs over the past week.
SECOND BASE - Mark Ellis has been ice cold going 4 for his last 36. Ray Durham was traded to the Brewers for a pair of minor leaguers. The Giants wanted to the ditch the contract and Milwaukee could use the infield depth. Durham is in a contract year & will push Rickie Weeks for playing time.
THIRD BASE - The Nationals activated Ryan Zimmerman on Tuesday. Hank Blalock came back from the DL, playing at third base. He is 5 for 30 (.167) since his return. The Dodgers traded for Casey Blake. It will allow LA to sent Blake DeWitt down & keep Nomar Garciaparra at shortstop. Garciaparra’s health is usually the roadblock. Edwin Encarnacion is 9 for 30 with 4 HRs since All Star break. He’s got to break out sometime, doesn’t he?
SHORTSTOP - Yunel Escobar's MRI showed a strain, he's managed to avoid the disabled list. Carlos Guillen missed several games to be with his wife during a difficult pregnancy. Troy Tulowitzki came back to action on July 20 and is 10 for 23 (.435) since being activated. Despite the troubles, fantasy owners, especially in NL only leagues, have to monitor his progress.
OUTFIELD - Johnny Damon had a couple of setbacks during his rehab, but was activated on July 21. He was red hot before the recent injury, but seems to still be struggling with injury. Gary Matthews has tear in his left knee. He’s lost his job, and this won’t help. Justin Upton won't return when eligible, it's looking like early August. Fred Lewis is battling bad bunions. Dave Roberts was activated and can give Lewis a day off.
STARTING PITCHERS - Roy Oswalt will return from his hip strain and pitch Monday night. Fausto Carmona pitched well in his first rehab start, but got shelled upon his return to the Majors. As long as he’s healthy, it’ll just take a little time to adjust. Joe Blanton was traded to Philadelphia for a handful of prospects. Blanton's 4-12 record didn't due him justice, but it's hard to believe a big turnaround is ahead in hitter-friendly Citizen's Bank Park. Jose Contreras was placed on the DL with elbow tendonitis. The nice fantasy ride is at an end for Contreras.
RELIEF PITCHERS - Troy Percival was activated from the 15 day DL. His age makes him a bit fragile and vulnerable to a relapse. Kerry Wood was placed on the DL with a blister. Carlos Marmol is the main closer until he returns. Billy Wagner is still experiencing shoulder problems, but has been perfect in his last 6 save opportunities. The Diamondbacks acquired Jon Rauch. He'll pitch the in the 8th for now, but Brandon Lyon owners should be a little nervous. Damaso Marte was sent to the Yankees this week. His value drops as he's moved into a setup role with no shot of overtaking Mariano Rivera.
