July 13, 2008
CATCHERS - Gerald Laird is on a rehab assignment and is scheduled to return after the All Star break. His counterpart, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, continues to scuffle with a .219 AVE. & .329 SLG%. John Buck has 2 HRs and 6 RBI over his last 33 ABs. He's got plenty of power, but his career average is typically quite low. The Marlins placed Matt Treanor on the DL with a hip strain. Florida will platoon between Paul Hoover & John Baker.
FIRST BASE - Paul Konerko is 6 for 21 (.286) since his return from the DL. Ryan Howard has seen his average rise to .233 on the season. Despite all of the strikeout talk, he should be around the .260 mark. The Mariners finally cut Richie Sexson. He hit .344 against left-handers, so he'll find a job with some team willing to take a chance in a platoon situation. Royals first baseman Ross Gload had a 9-game hit streak snapped. He certainly has the ability to hit around .280, but he still possesses very little power.
SECOND BASE - Ian Kinsler has a 23 game hit streak and is one of the leading fantasy breakouts this year. Jeff Kent is still battling back stiffness and will receive his fair share of time off. All owners, especially in H2H leagues, will have to continually keep alert. Dan Uggla returned to the lineup going 0 for 3 in his first game back.
THIRD BASE - Edwin Encarnacion is 10 for his last 27 ABs (.370). His average is at .255 and steadily marching to his career line at .270. Chad Tracy has posted a .303 average and 4 HRs in 119 ABs. NL leaguers can find some value with him until he cools off or is hurt again. Aubrey Huff finishes the first half with 18 HRs - third-most among fantasy eligible third basemen.
SHORTSTOP - Edgar Renteria suffered a mild hamstring injury and won't play until after All Star break. Hanley Ramirez left a game with shoulder problems. He says he's OK, but keep a close eye on the situation. Yunel Escobar is still suffering shoulder pain. His backup, Brent Lillibridge, has hit .154 in limited time this season. Troy Tulowitski was placed on the DL with a cut finger. More troubles for the young middle infielder continues to hurt his value.
OUTFIELD - Vernon Wells has a strained hamstring and will miss 4-6 weeks. Once a again, he showed signs of life after his last DL stint, but he just can't seem to shake the injury bug. Ryan Church experienced dizziness earlier in the week. Concussions are one of the worst baseball injuries because the are so unpredictable. Ryan Ludwick and Rick Ankiel have 20 HRs each on the season. Both young Cardinal outfielders have a high probability to finish in the 30-35 HR range. Jeff Francoeur was quickly recalled. He may be a cheap waiver wire addition if he's available in your league.
STARTING PITCHERS - Roy Oswalt only pitched one inning before leaving with a hip strain. He's constantly battled injuries this season; the Astros may shut him down for a while. The Blue Jays placed Dustin McGowan on the DL with shoulder inflammation. CC Sabathia was traded to Milwaukee for Matt Laporta. The Indians will be hard-pressed to keep Laporta in the minors too long, he's got big leaguer written all over him. In Chicago, the Cubs acquired Rich Harden for a player package including Matt Murton & Sean Gallagher. Considering Billy Beane's successful track record as A's GM, fantasy owners should pay attention to the new additions. Pedro Martinez left his outing against the Rockies with shoulder pain. He'll be shut down at least through the All Star break. It seems the injuries will take their toll on him, and fantasy owners can't rely on him for any consistent production.
RELIEF PITCHERS - Takashi Saito left a game with elbow soreness. If it's a serious injury for Saito, Jonathan Broxton would be tabbed to close and is a fine stopgap option. JJ Putz has been progressing well on a rehab assignment and is on pace to return the week following the All Star break. Three leading closers finished the first half with a 4.00+ ERA - CJ Wilson, Brian Wilson, & George Sherrill. Out of the 3, CJ Wilson still seems to have the loosest grip on his job.
