| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| July 5, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - The Giants recalled Eliezer Alfonzo and demoted Steve Holm. Alfonzo served a 50 game drug suspension and was decent last year. His value is topped in NL only leagues since he won’t see much time behind Benji Molina. Humberto Quintero landed on the DL, giving J.R. Towles another chance to redeem himself. Chris Snyder fractured a testicle. Matsui and Guillen’s hemorrhoids don’t seem too bad now, do they? Michael Barrett broke his nose and will be placed on the disabled list with Josh Bard. Nick Hundley will get playing time, although his minor league numbers don’t show anything significant. |
| FIRST BASE - The Rangers recalled Chris Davis. He’s got some decent pop, and can be looked as AL sleeper. Paul Konerko began a Triple A rehab assignment & is on track to be activated next week. Todd Helton is DL bound with a sore back. Jeff Baker should pick up some starts while Helton is out.
| SECOND BASE - The Mets will send Luis Castillo to the disabled list. In the meantime, Damon Easley should receive playing time at second base. Argenis Reyes was also recalled; he’s posted 13 steals in the minors this year. Joe Inglett batted .429 over the past week. His season average is .322, but his lack of other production relegates him to AL only consideration. Alexi Casilla is suffering from bad finger. He's still able to pinch hit in the meantime. |
| THIRD BASE - Eric Chavez was placed on the DL with shoulder problems. He may require surgery if he can’t make progress during his rehab. Nomar Garciaparra returned and got a start at shortstop. If he gains MI eligibility and actually stays healthy, owners might stumble on some production.
| SHORTSTOP - Rafael Furcal will undergo back surgery. Minimum time lost is being estimated at 2 months, if not the entire season. Michael Young has a sore groin. No word on him missing significant time yet. Yunel Escobar missed several games due to a shoulder strain, but returned Wednesday.
| OUTFIELD - Eric Byrnes may require surgery on his hamstring injury; he’s due to miss a considerable amount of time again. Juan Pierre will miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained knee. Andruw Jones is set to be activated, giving the Dodgers options…. sort of. David DeJesus missed a couple of games with bruised ribs. He has provided value in several categories and mixed leaguers should consider him even though he plays at a deep position. Jeff Francoeur was demoted to Double A. That’s a rough move, but it’s apparently needed. He’ll be back up soon. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - Jeff Francis was placed on the 15 day DL with a shoulder issues. Mark Redman was recalled to step in; he shouldn’t have much fantasy interest. Brett Myers was sent to the minors and is now being examined medically. Unless you have an ultra-deep roster, he shouldn’t be kept. The Dodgers activated Hiroki Kuroda and sent Clayton Kershaw to Double A. You can’t help feeling that Kershaw will see the Majors again soon. Roy Oswalt is scheduled to have his start pushed to Tuesday. Chris Sampson will take the spot start in his place.
| RELIEF PITCHERS - Matt Capps will miss at least 2 months. The Pirates will probably turn to Damaso Marte to fill in as closer. The Indians designated Joe Borowski for assignment. Despite the high save numbers over the past few seasons, his other stats were well-below par. Rafael Perez, Rafael Betancourt, and Masa Kobayashi are all in the mix for saves, with Kobayashi being the favorite. Bobby Jenks is battling arm soreness, but he thinks he should be available again soon.
