| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| June 21, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - Victor Martinez will miss significant time with bone chips in his right elbow. Backup Kelly Shoppach is an option best left for AL only leagues. The Indians also acquired Sal Fasano from the Braves, he has no fantasy value. Gerald Laird will be placed on the DL. Jarrod Saltalamacchia gets his chance for a little more backstop action. |
| FIRST BASE - Chris Duncan will play first while Albert Puljos is on the DL. Duncan is 6 for 38 (.158) since being called back up. Puljos should return by the end of the week. Joey Votto saw his average drop to .269. Since then, he’s heated up raising it to .289 over a mini 6 -game hit streak. Justin Morneau is maintaining his average by hitting .305, but only has 1 HR in June. He belted 11 on the season, and the 30 HR plateau is still well within reach. John Bowker hit 2 HR & 7 RBI over the past week. He's hitting .275 vs. RHP, so he proved to be a surprise platoon option for the Giants.
| SECOND BASE - Just a week after he was called up, Josh Barfield sprained his finger and was placed on the 15 day DL. Chase Utley is slumping going 0-23. Rickie Weeks is on pace to return from the DL this weekend. Kaz Matsui is batting .266, with 1 HR. His 15 steals on the season keeps him in the discussion a stopgap option in NL only leagues. he's suffering from a strained hamstring as of late. |
| THIRD BASE - The Padres recalled Chase Headley this week. Although he'll mostly play outfield in San Diego, he often qualifies at 3B in most stat services. Those NL owners in search of corner help might want to take a chance. Jorge Cantú continues to impress, blasting 4 HRs over the past week. He's gone above NL only value this year, proving helpful as a CI in mixed leagues as well. Melvin Mora has a bruised knee, but was able to pinch-hit. The Angels activated Chone Figgins. Make sure he's at full health before dropping the replacement you acquired; he's had setbacks before.
| SHORTSTOP - In Kansas City, Mike Aviles is batting .339 and can me looked to as a MI whiles he's hot Omar Vizquel is batting .171 since his return, and looks a bit lost at the plate. You can't depend on things turning around soon. Troy Tulowitzki was activated this week. He did well in a minor league rehab assignment and came back quicker than expected.
| OUTFIELD - The Mets, in desperate need of outfield help, acquired Trot Nixon from the Diamondbacks. Nixon had performed well in the minors and prove to be of value in NL only leagues. In Arizona, Eric Byrnes appears close to being activated. Josh Willingham is scheduled to return this week. Marcus Thames has 9 HRs in June, bringing his season total to 14. Thames will slow down, but he’s got a ton of power. The career .243 shows he can be streaky. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - A trio of Aces landed on the disabled list this week. Chien-Ming Wang is suffering from a sprained foot and may be out until September. The Blue Jays sent Shaun Marcum to the 15 day DL and recalled John Parrish. Carlos Zambrano was placed on the DL with a mild shoulder strain. Sean Marshall will take his place in the rotation. Both Marshall and Parrish can pick you up a couple spot starts while Zambrano & Marcum heal. Daisuke Matsuzaka looked terrible in his first start back from the DL. He had a solid rehab, so it might be a fluke. But, owners need to have caution in case the injury regressed.
| RELIEF PITCHERS - J.J. Putz was sent to the DL, leaving Brandon Morrow to get the majority of save opportunities. Morrow has been outstanding in middle relief, and is a good option for owners who lost Putz. He's suffering from back issues, so keep an eye on the situation. Billy Wagner blew a third straight save opportunity, but bounced back for 3 straight saves. Brad Lidge is one of the leagues best closers this year. It’s hard to see that stellar 0.90 ERA not blowing up soon. He's due for a correction like Billy Wagner, but that's to be expected. Jason Isringhausen was activated by St. Louis, he'll appear as a middle reliever upon his return.
