| FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT |
| June 11, 2008 |
| CATCHERS - Ronny Paulino was sent down to Triple-A. That leaves Raul Chavez as Ryan Doumit's backup. Doumit came off the DL and went 1 for 12, but blasted 2 HRs in a 4 for 4 effort to snap out of it. Another catcher, J.R. Towles, was also sent down to Triple-A. The Astros will go with Humberto Quintero & Brad Ausmus, which shouldn't get fantasy owners excited. Jesus Flores has done an admirable job for the Nationals by hitting .318. Last year he batted .244 over 180 ABs. |
| FIRST BASE - Kevin Millar is 11 for 35 (.314) since the beginning on the month & he already has 11 HRs on the season. Ryan Garko heated up, bringing his average from .230 to .269 since June 1. Derrek Lee is in a mini-slump going 4 for 21 (.190). It shouldn't worry any owners, June has actually been a productive month for Lee in the past. Mike Jacobs is battling a sore right quad muscle. He has 15 HRs on the season, but batting only .246 with a .284 OBP. Albert Pujols left Tuesday's game with a calf injury. He's awfully tough, but the Cardinals indicate that this one may keep him down.
| SECOND BASE - Brian Roberts is 12 for his last 34 (.353) and has 18 SBs on the season. He's still constantly mentioned in trade rumors, but nothing looks imminent. José López continues to maintain a .290-.300 AVE and he hit a HR in 3 consecutive games last week. Cleveland recalled Josh Barfield from Buffalo. He hit .255 in 259 ABs in Triple-A this year. He had a great 2006 campaign, but disappointed last year. Just monitor for now. Rickie Weeks was paced on the DL. So far, it's unknown how long Weeks will be out. Craig Counsell, and possibly Bill Hall, will fill in. |
| THIRD BASE - Casey Blake sports a .244 season average, but hit .472 with RISP. He leads the Tribe with 39 RBI. Alex Gordon has seen his average plummet to .266 from .296 on May 21. He's managed to get a hit in each of his past 3 games, so he might be getting back on track. Ty Wigginton is batting .357 over the past week but the Astros have indicated Geoff Blum will get a few more ABs. Troy Glaus blasted 3 HRs over the past week, essentially doubling his season total. As long as he stays healthy to get enough at-bats, you'll see him in the 25-30 HR range.
| SHORTSTOP - Over the past week, Hanley Ramírez blasted 6 HRs and stole 3 bases on his way to a .393 AVE. His season average hasn't fallen below .292 since the second day of the season. Bobby Crosby has hit safely in 8 out of his last 10 games. His average is still hovering in the .260 area, but he is currently tied with A-Rod for the lead in RBI among AL shortstops. Jerry Hairston Jr. was placed on the DL with a fractured thumb. Jeff Keppinger just began a minor league rehab assignment, so it will be Paul Janish until his return.
| OUTFIELD - Vernon Wells is 7 for 16 since his return (.438). It's encouraging to see Wells display his health, feel good about getting him in the lineup. Matt Holliday should be activated this week after being sidelined with a strained hamstring. Seth Smith will be sent down to make room. José Guillén raised his average 30 points over the past 10 games. He's also hit 5 HRs in the same time span. Matching last year's 23 HR effort doesn't seem so distant now. Josh Willingham is in extended spring training. He's still a few weeks away, at the least. |
| STARTING PITCHERS - Two Cardinal pitchers are experiencing injuries. Adam Wainwright was placed on the 15 day DL. Joel Pinero will take his place in the rotation. Todd Wellemeyer has elbow problems, so St. Louis will skip his turn in the rotation. He’s scheduled to start Friday. Jake Westbrook is out for the year; Jeremy Sowers will take over his slot until Fausto Carmona comes back. Another pitcher, Jeremy Bonderman, is also out for the year. Armando Galarraga will stick, especially since Dontrelle Willis was sent to Single-A. Joba Chamberlain's second start was a little better, but it will still take a few more games before the Yankees significantly loosen up on the pitch count. Kevin Correia is set to be activated June 15. Patrick Misch (no, not Barry Zito) will lose his spot in the rotation. Correia was on his way to showing some NL only value before he was hurt.
| RELIEF PITCHERS - Troy Percival should return this week. He’ll take back the closer role right away; Dan Wheeler hasn't pitched well. Jason Isringhausen set off on a minor league rehab. Ryan Franklin has done a steady job in his absence, so you probably won't see Izzy rushed back into the sole closer role too soon. Joe Borowski pitched 5 consecutive scoreless innings since his return. Don’t get too excited, scoreless streaks aren’t exactly his strong suit.
