FREE FANTASY BASEBALL REPORT
August 25, 2008
CATCHERS - The Red Sox signed David Ross after his release by the Reds. His batting average is always low, but he’s got pop. In Boston, he'll be mostly another bat off the bench. Even though the Giants Pablo Sandoval played catcher in the minors, he has been used at both first and third base while with the big league club. Bengie Molina shouldn’t see playing time cut. Sandoval is awfully raw and has been on fire since the promotion. If he qualifies as a backstop, NL owners can find value while he is hot.
FIRST BASE - Ryan Garko is batting .378 in his last 10 games. He only has 10 HRs on the season with a .257 AVE. After hitting 21 HRs with a .289 mark in 2007, this year has been a disappointment for those hoping for mixed league consideration. The Braves placed Casey Kotchman on the bereavement list. He had 2 hits in his last 28 ABs. Since his recall by the Giants, Travis Ishikawa has hit .233 in 30 ABs. You'll probably see John Bowker back up soon.
SECOND BASE - Mark DeRosa blasted his 18th homer over the weekend. He displayed fantastic power this season and his position versatility makes him a great asset for mixed leaguers. The Mets plan to activate Luis Castillo from the disabled list this week. Alexi Casilla came off the 15 day DL. He is batting .301 over 266 ABs this season.
THIRD BASE - Alex Gordon is likely out for the season after he was placed on the 15 day DL with a torn muscle. The Royals started Mark Teahen at the hot corner; he is batting .246 with 10 HRs. The Blue Jays acquired Jose Bautista from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although he is streaky, Bautista possesses power. He can serve as insurance for Scott Rolen and also play outfield. Joe Crede is set to be activated from the disabled list. He's got all the power you want from a CI, but back problems continue to dog him.
SHORTSTOP - Hanley Ramirez is day-to-day with a sore right thumb. The Marlins haven't mentioned a DL trip, but keep a close eye on him. Marco Scutaro is batting .357 over his last 10 games. His season average stands at .268, so he's relegated to AL only consideration. The Red Sox are shooting for a September 1 return for Julio Lugo. He injured his quadriceps, so an important part of his fantasy value is questionable.
OUTFIELD - J.D. Drew will be placed on the 15 day DL. Jacoby Ellsbury will move to his spot in the meantime. Nate McLouth missed several games with the flu. He should be ready to go this week. Garret Anderson hurt his knee over the weekend. Gary Matthews Jr. will pick up the slack if it's a serious injury.
STARTING PITCHERS - Josh Beckett had his turn in the rotation moved to Friday. He was experiencing tingling in his hand, but is feeling better. Justin Duchscherer was placed on the DL. He injured the same hip he had troubles with last year. He's been pitching a lot of innings, so things may have eventually caught up to him. Johnny Cueto will miss his next start with elbow tightness. The Blue Jays sent Shawn Marcum down to the minors. This is likely a temporary move, similar to Jesse Litsch’s demotion.
RELIEF PITCHERS - Jason Isringhausen suffered a possible career-ending injury. St. Louis will turn to Chris Perez & abandon the Adam Wainwright talk. Owners needing saves should grab Perez. Eddie Guardado will be back in a middle relief setting after being traded to the Twins. Frank Francisco emerges as the frontrunner for saves in Texas. .
