With a full month now firmly in the books, we noticed some
surprising names at the top of the hitter leader board. Here’s a rundown of some of the more
interesting developments.
Paul Konerko – 1st HRs (12) MLB: Konerko has always shown significant power
during his career, but the 1 HR per 6.75 AB is off the charts. He only has 24 RBI to show for it, so let’s
hope the White Sox can eventually get the top of the lineup squared away.
Jorge Cantu – 3rd RBI (25) MLB: Cantu’s 25 RBI through April has certainly
given fantasy owners a nice jolt to kick off the year. It’s a difficult pace to maintain for the
rest of the season, but he’s proven the ability to drive in runs in the past
(95 in 2008 and 100 in 2009).
Kelly Johnson – 2nd HR (9) NL: Johnson is enjoying a nice little
renaissance in the desert. He’s been
leading off and will have plenty of opportunity with such a dangerous lineup
behind him. Johnson’s 9 dingers makes
him well above pace to break his previous career-high (16).
Ty Wiggington – 3rd HR (8) AL: Wiggington has consistently displayed 20-HR
pop in the past, but 8 through the April are way ahead of schedule. Regardless, he qualifies for multiple
positions in most leagues, which gives his owners plenty of flexibility to keep
him in the lineup.
Chase Headley – 3rd SB (8) NL: Eight stolen bases are a nice surprise,
especially since he stole 10 in 543 ABs last year. Considering he only has 1 HR and 8 RBI, his steal totals and .327
AVE are the main qualities that make him worth owning.
Ryan Theriot – 1st Hits (39) NL: After a slow start that saw Theriot’s
average drop to .222 on April 19, he’s turned it on to lead the National League
with 39 hits. He’s been a fine starter
at a weak position and an invaluable stopgap for those owners who lost Jimmy
Rollins.
