Just when you thought Jake Peavy was turning the corner, he
goes and suffers a possible season-ending injury. The official diagnosis is a detached latissimus dorsi muscle –
anything that is “detached” doesn’t sound good. Peavy had a rough April, going 0-2 with a 7.85 ERA and 1.81 WHIP,
but a softer schedule allowed him to bring his ERA down to 4.23 and a
respectable 1.23 WHIP. We all knew
Peavy would have a tough time adjusting to the A.L., but we sincerely believed
he could emerge as a #3 fantasy starter.
In this case, patience didn’t win the day. After his owners finally started to see some
encouraging results, Peavy’s spotty injury history popped up. He had a start pushed back due to “dead arm”
issues and now a detached lat. Even if
he does come back this season, it will be similar to last year’s 3-game stint
at the end of September – it’s not worth the wait.
In all likelihood, Peavy’s season is done. Go ahead and cut bait because it’s time to
hit the waiver wire.
