Wow, that was quick.
Right after we posted an article encouraging AL-only owners not to panic
about Lee being traded to the National League, the Mariners sent him off to
Texas for prospect Justin Smoak.
Of course, Cliff Lee goes from pitcher-friendly Safeco to an
offensive haven in Arlington so that’s definitely a downgrade. But, he pitched well in another
hitter-friendly park in Philadelphia last year, seeing his ERA only rise from
3.14 to 3.39 while dropping his WHIP from 1.30 to 1.13. Also, he won 7 games in 22 starts for
Cleveland while only needing 12 starts in Philly to get to the 7-win mark.
There may be a few similarities to last year’s scenario that
could play out this season with the Rangers.
You will see his ERA spike a bit, but it’s hard to imagine his 0.95 WHIP
getting any lower. However, owners
should be pretty happy with the extra wins and noticeable jump in run-support.
Oh, by the way, don’t forget he’s still in a contract year. He’s getting ready to push for some big
money and has plenty of incentive to keep rattling off quality starts.
