QUARTERBACKS
Kyle Orton kept Denver's
win streak alive against New England completing 35 of 48 passes for 330 yards
and 2 TDs. What game manager? Orton has never been "great", but
he's not horrible. You can't consider
him a QB1, but he's one of the stronger QB2s out there. Josh Johnson racked up 50 pass attempts in
garbage time versus the Eagles.
Unfortunately, he barely had a 50% competition rate to go along with 3
INTs. Chad Henne won his Monday night debut against the Jets completing 20
passes out of 26 attempts for 241 yards and 2 TDs. A 53-yard TD to Ted Ginn Jr. boosted the stats; but Henne handled
the Jets' solid defensive unit throughout the contest (0 sacks, 0 INTs). Derek Anderson went 2 for 17 for 23 yards
and WON. Unbelievable, don't expect the
NFL gods to be so kind to DA in the future.
Apparently the Browns and Mangini don't care - rumors surrounding a
trade for Brady Quinn are beginning to resurface. It's only been a couple of games, but, out of the 3 replacement
QBs, Henne looks like the player with the best chance to have some fantasy
value.
RUNNING BACKS
Clinton Portis scored two TDs in Sunday's loss to the
Panthers. Earlier in the week, news
broke that Portis and FB Mike Sellers had to be physically separated during a
verbal altercation. In last week’s loss
to the Lions, Portis asked the coaching staff to pull Sellers after he blocked
the wrong player on a goal line play.
Portis isn't exactly making friends in the locker room and he's clearly
struggling against poor opponents despite the multiple TDs last week. If he produces another ho-hum performance
against the Chiefs this Sunday, he'll be bench material until proven
otherwise. Ahmad Bradshaw rolled over
the Raiders for 110 rushing yards and 2 TDs.
Brandon Jacobs was actually shutdown by a poor Oakland rush defense
posting 67 yards at a 3.2 average while Bradshaw was able to simply outrun the
opposition. Bradshaw isn't the Giants
#1 RB, but he needs to be owned in most leagues.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Miles Austin earned Player of the Week honors after catching
10 passes for 250 yards and 2 TDs. The
Cowboys barely skipped a beat without Roy Williams (not much of a surprise) and
coach Wade Phillips hinted at an increased role for Austin in the future. Obviously he has to be grabbed, and, if he
emerges, it will certainly mean less looks for Williams and Patrick
Crayton. Roddy White handsomely
rewarded patient owners with a 210-yard 2 TD performance. The game planning during the bye week did
some good, and it looks like he's back on track as a fantasy superstar. Rookie Jeremy Machlin hauled in 6 passes for
142 yards and 2 TDs in a win over Tampa Bay.
Kevin Curtis is basically non-existent, so this is Machlin's job to
lose. Austin Collie racked up 97 yards
and 2 TDs in a week 5 victory over the Titans.
Actually, most experts predicted Collie to take the reigns after Anthony
Gonzalez went down, but Pierre Garcon evolved into a big play threat. Collie deserves a roster spot on fantasy
rosters. Mike Sims-Walker was declared
inactive on Sunday due to a violation of team rules. It was later reported that he missed bed check after being
"out late" with a woman. He
owes all of his fantasy owners some sort of repercussion - a picture would be
nice. Eddie Royal finally awoke with 10
grabs for 90 yards. Unfortunately, his
role still isn't clearly defined yet to trust him as a consistent week-to-week
performer – at least it’s progress. In
the year of the "fantasy wide receiver," Collie, Machlin and Austin
certainly provide some hope for owners who lack depth.
TIGHT ENDS
Kellen Winslow had 9 receptions for 102 yards and a TD. The Bucs have no one else in the receiver
corps, so Winslow should continue to be their primary threat - for what it's
worth. You'll see the Packers'
Jermichael Finley on a lot of sleeper lists this week. The Lions have been especially terrible handling opposing tight
ends, giving Finely some sneaky bye week replacement value.
