QUARTERBACKS
Matthew Stafford dislocated
his knee, but Lions haven't ruled him out for Week 5. He hasn't practiced all week, so Daunte Culpepper will likely get
the nod. Matt Hasselbeck has been
limited in practice this week as he recovers from a broken rib while Seneca
Wallace has been taking his fair share of first team reps. The starter this
Sunday deserves a look as a bye week replacement against the porous Jaguars'
secondary. Jeff Fisher is sticking with
Kerry Collins at quarterback. That
probably has more to do with the lack of trust in Vince Young rather than a
vote of confidence for Collins. Matt
Cassel has hardly looked like a rock star over the past 2 games, but he went up
against two of the better defenses in the league. This week, he faces a Dallas defensive unit that has been
particularly bad versus the pass. The
Chiefs also rank near the bottom in pass defense making this game a sneaky high
scoring contest (odds makers have the over/under at 42.5 points).
RUNNING BACKS
Willie Parker is unlikely to play this week against the
Lions. Rashard Mendenhall ran for 165
yards and 2 TDs last week is a fine option against Detroit. If he continues to avoid the injury-bug,
Mendenhall has a good chance to become a more prominent feature in the Steeler
offense. Jamal Lewis is still bothered
by a strained hamstring. Look for Jerome
Harrison to get another start this Sunday if Lewis can’t suit up. Harrison rushed for 121 yards last week and
was even targeted 7 times by Derek Anderson.
He should put up some decent numbers against the Bills' 27th ranked
rushing defense this week if there isn’t a timeshare. Ricky Williams has been surprisingly solid over the first 4
games. Last week he and Ronnie Brown
combined for 200 yards on 36 attempts.
Brown's knee seems fine this year, but owners with extra roster space
should consider Williams as a legit handcuff.
Kevin Smith scored 2 TDs last week, but only amassed 30 rushing
yards. He gets Pittsburgh this week, so
he'll have another tough time racking up the yardage against the league's third
best rush defense.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Derrick Mason had another solid outing hauling in 7 balls
for 88 yards and a TD. He's been held
out of practice this week with a shoulder injury, monitor his progress. Cleveland rookie Mohamed Massaquoi 8
reception 148-yard game against Cincinnati already turned some heads. With Braylon Edwards now out of town,
Massaquoi looks like an enticing fantasy addition. The Browns' quarterback situation is in shambles, but he has a
chance to emerge as the #1 receiver on a team that will be playing from behind
a lot. In New York, Braylon Edwards
will need a little time to adjust to the new surroundings, but the Jets
certainly view him as a valuable commodity considering the package they gave
up. Jerricho Cotchery takes a bit of a
hit since he will see fewer opportunities in the long term, but is still
valuable in PPR leagues. Mario
Manningham caught 1 pass for 43 yards in a 27-16 win over the Chiefs. It was an encouraging sign that he was
targeted 8 times, but he goes up against a decent Raider secondary and there is
a slight chance David Carr might have to fill in for a dinged-up Eli Manning.
TIGHT ENDS
Heath Miller shredded the Charger secondary hauling in 8
receptions for 70 yards and 2 TDs. He
has Detroit on the slate for Week 5, so expect another solid outing. Marcedes Lewis caught 4 passes for 76 yards
and a TD against Tennessee in Week 4.
The match up against Seattle this Sunday has a chance to be high
scoring, so Lewis can certainly be viewed as a Bye Week replacement.
