CATCHER
Jarrod Saltalamacchia landed
on the DL with a sore arm. Taylor
Teagarden will receive most of the starts and gets a slight uptick in AL only
leagues. Ryan Doumit missed a couple of
games with a sore wrist, but returned Saturday. Russell Martin made his 2009 debut at third base.
FIRST
BASE
Lance Berkman finally retuned
from the DL and he promptly hit 2 doubles.
Miguel Cabrera gave the fantasy-scare of the week when he was plunked on
the wrist by a pitch. He missed a game
but was able to return. Nick Johnson
pulled his hamstring and exited Sunday's game.
At least he made it to mid-August.
SECOND
BASE
Martin Prado missed Sunday's
game with dizziness. Kelly Johnson will
get the nod to start in his place. The
Rangers activated Ian Kinsler from the 15-day DL. Maicer Izturis was nailed on his arm by a pitch and left Tuesday
game early; the Angels aren't expecting a DL stint.
SHORTSTOP
Milwaukee optioned struggling
JJ Hardy to AAA and recalled speedy infielder Alcides Escobar. Hardy never found that elusive hot streak this
year while Escobar immediately has value in NL-only leagues if you need stolen
bases. Derek Jeter was hit on his foot
by a pitch, but X-rays were negative.
Without Jed Lowrie, the Red Sox acquired Alex Gonzalez from the Reds.
THIRD
BASE
David Wright has a concussion
after being smacked in the head by a Matt Cain pitch. A DL trip is quite likely.
Aramis Ramirez returned to the lineup after missing several games with a
sore shoulder and sore throat. The
Brewers designated Bill Hall for assignment ending his Milwaukee career. Adrian Beltre landed on the DL with an
injured testicle. There was even talk
of surgery....um, let's move on. Scott
Rolen hit the DL with concussion symptoms…..That’s better.
OUTFIELD
After being out for a month,
Torii Hunter had 2 hits in his return from the disabled list. Cody Ross sat out a game with a sore back,
but was able to return on Sunday. Nate
McLouth is questionable for the next series after tweaking his hamstring on
Saturday. Nelson Cruz, who has been out
since August 4, was finally placed on the DL.
The White Sox acquired Alex Rios from the Blue Jays for - nothing. Toronto was just happy to get out of Rios'
monster contract.
STARTING
PITCHER
The Red Sox cut ties with
John Smoltz and his 8.38 ERA. Several
teams appear to be interested and you know he doesn't want to end on such a bad
note. Hiroki Kuroda took a line drive
off of the head and needed to be hospitalized.
If he's not DL'ed, he'll certainly miss a few starts. Milwaukee claimed ex-Brewer Doug Davis off
of waivers from Arizona, but the two sides have made little progress on a
deal. Chris Young doesn't seem to be
improving and is likely out for the rest of the year.
RELIEF
PITCHER
Texas reliever Neftali Feliz
now has 16 K's in 8.2 IP and he even picked up a save over the weekend. The Rangers seem content with him in middle
relief, but he is certainly turning some heads. Brad Lidge blew his 8th save of the season. The Phillies will stick with him, but they
could use some help via a waiver wire trade.
