CATCHER
Dioneer Navarro took a foul ball off the noggin, but he
shows no signs of a concussion. Ryan
Doumit finally returned after being out since April 19. Expect him to be a little rusty after such a
long layoff.
FIRST
BASE
Derrek
Lee had an early exit due to neck spasms, but it should clear up. He's been on a torrid stretch, blasting 6
homeruns in July. The Rangers finally
had enough and demoted Chris Davis to AAA.
He's 4 for 8 in his brief stint back in the minors and will return to
the big club eventually. Mark Teixeira
hit his first homerun in 96 ABs. He's
prone to some streakiness; there's no need to worry.
SECOND
BASE
Ian
Kinsler is batting .060 over his last 33 ABs.
You always have to worry about it being a health issue for Kinsler. Brian Roberts missed a few games due to the
flu. Freddy Sanchez missed several
games with a sore back. He has plenty
of incentive to play hurt - if he gets 600 ABs this year, an 8 million dollar
option for next year is automatically triggered.
SHORTSTOP
Seattle
traded Yuniesky Betancourt to Kansas City for two minor league pitchers. Betancourt shouldn't be anywhere near a
fantasy roster. JJ Hardy had to sit out
on Sunday with a sore collarbone. If
July turns out to be another slow month, you will see Hardy's name hitting
fantasy waiver wires soon.
THIRD
BASE
A
finger infection will cause Evan Longoria to miss the All Star game. Oakland sent Jack Hannahan to Seattle for a
minor league pitcher. Hannahan isn't
worthy of a roster spot on any fantasy team.
Mark DeRosa was placed on the 15 day DL with a torn sheath in his wrist. That doesn't sound like a minor injury,
he'll have to make some adjustments to his swing if he plans on returning after
two weeks.
OUTFIELD
Jay
Bruce suffered a fractured wrist and will be placed on the 15 day DL. Jonny Gomes receives the playing time and is
worth a look in NL only leagues. The
Braves traded perennial underachiever Jeff Francouer to the Mets for Ryan
Church. Both players fit the typical
"change of scenery" scenario to help jumpstart their production. Philadelphia activated Raul Ibanez from the
15 day DL.
STARTING
PITCHER
Johnny
Cueto gave up 9 ERs in only 2/3 of an inning causing his ERA to go above 3.00
for the first time since April 17.
Randy Johnson strained his shoulder on an awkward swing. The injury looked bad - if you have limited
bench space, consider dropping him.
Jonathan Sanchez stepped into the rotation and promptly threw a
no-hitter. Sanchez has all of the
physical attributes, but has lacked consistency in his mental approach. Rick Porcello will have his next start
skipped. Detroit already indicated that
they will shutdown the rookie early.
Ryan Dempster broke his toe and was placed on the 15 day DL. J.P. Ricciardi publicly stated that Roy
Halladay is on the trading block. It
will take a king's ransom to land Halladay.
If he does get traded, it will likely be to the National League.
RELIEF
PITCHER
Arizona
sent Tony Pena Jr. to the White Sox for minor leaguer first baseman Brandon
Allen. Alfredo Aceves will take
Chien-Ming Wang's spot in the rotation.
It seems like a temporary move until the Yankees make a trade. Toronto activated Scott Downs from the 15
day DL and released BJ Ryan.
