CATCHER
All fantasy eyes focused on Matt Wieters when the Orioles
announced his promotion from Triple-A.
The most significant comments came from Andy MacPhail, who indicated
Wieters is ready to be on the roster for the rest of the season. Jesus Flores will miss at least three months
with a stress fracture in his shoulder.
The Nationals have no immediate plans to upgrade the position. Ryan Doumit is progressing according to schedule,
but is several weeks away from returning.
The Mets traded Ramon Castro to the White Sox. AL Leaguers who use 2 catchers now have another option.
FIRST
BASE
Chris
Davis has seen his average stall at .194 over the first two months of the
season. He is taking a significant
amount of extra batting practice to help him get out of the funk, but hasn’t
shown any signs of life yet. A lot of
analysts are down on Davis, but we've all seem his power potential and the
impact he can have in the HR and RBI categories. Yes, he strikeouts way too much, but his 2009 rate is
extraordinarily high. He's dug himself
a big hole, so he'll need to repeat last year's performance (84 hits/295 ABs,
.285 AVE) just to reach the .250 mark.
The Reds sent Joey Votto to the DL with "stress-related
issues." Apparently, it has
something to do with his recent dizzy spells.
SECOND
BASE
Kaz
Matsui landed on the DL, again, with a strained hamstring. Felipe Lopez missed several games with his
own hamstring injury. As of now,
Arizona isn't planning on a DL trip. The Cubs placed Aaron Miles on the DL and
recalled Andres Blanco. There's not
much there, even in NL only leagues.
SHORTSTOP
Hanley
Ramirez's groin was bothering him, but he should be fine. St. Louis placed Khalil Greene on the DL
with anxiety-related problems. Zack
Greinke proved that those type of issues can be dealt with, but Greene has a
big hill to climb in order to be a fantasy asset in 2009.
THIRD
BASE
Garrett
Atkins went 6 for 23 (.260) over the past week, and Josh Fields raised his
average 20 points to .244. Both are
still on thin ice. Joe Crede fouled a
pitch off of his knee and was removed from Saturday's game - it's always
something. The Cubs placed Ryan Freel
on the DL and recalled Jake Fox. Fox
has 17 HRs this year in Iowa and is worth a look in NL-only leagues.
OUTFIELD
Luke
Scott blasted 6 HRs last week. Even
though the Orioles are flush with bats, he'll get his fair share at DH while
he's scorching hot. He's always
possessed power, but expect the average to adjust back down. Coco Crisp missed several games with a sore
shoulder and then was placed on the bereavement list. His legs are sound, but the shoulder bothering him when he swings
from the right side. Josh Hamilton was
diagnosed with a form of a sports hernia.
Estimates from 2 weeks to 2 months of missed time have surfaced, which
is enough to scare any fantasy owner.
STARTING
PITCHER
Brett
Myers will undergo hip surgery and miss the rest of the season. JA Happ will
take over the spot and is a decent NL
only option. Considering the offensive
support, he can be mixed league sleeper in he stays in the rotation Kelvim Escobar is scheduled to return next
week. During his minor-league rehab, he displayed sound mid 90-s velocity, so
he should certainly be monitored in all formats as a decent flier.
RELIEF
PITCHER
Brian
Fuentes has given up 4 ER in his last 3 IP.
Despite the occasional struggles, he seems to have a grasp on the closer
role. Joakim Soria nearing the end of
his rehab but his return date is still uncertain. The Giants activated Sergio Romo off of the disabled list. Bob Howry has been ineffective this season,
so Romo can assume 8th inning duties with Jeremy Affeldt and Brandon
Medders. Baltimore sent Chris Ray to
AAA. He showed signs of progress, but
the 9.39 ERA was too much to handle.
