CATCHER
Victor Martinez has 1 hit in his last 19 ABs. He can't stay hot forever, you had to expect
some adjustment fromm his .400 average.
Kenji Johjima was placed on the DL with a broken toe. No word yet on a
Jeff Clement call up. Ivan Rodriguez
has been hampered by leg pain. He's 2
for his last 22 since blasting 300th career HR. Chris Iannetta strained his hamstring and landed on the DL. Yorvit Torrealba will get a temporary boost
in value.
FIRST
BASE
Travis
Ishikawa finally hit his first homerun of the season. He had 7 HRs in Spring Training but hasn't show any consistent
power during the regular season.
Several hot hitting first basemen missed time with various illnesses. Nick Johnson has a stomach virus, Todd
Helton left a game with a migraine, Joey Votto's ear infection continues to
give him trouble, and Derrek Lee sat out with the flu. It's difficult to recall this many
"illness" related incidents.
Throw in Conor Jackson who admits he has no idea when he can return.
SECOND
BASE
Adam
Kennedy has been on an absolute tear since becoming an Athletic. He can't keep it up, but AL leaguers can use
the hot hand for the time being.
Brandon Phillips suffered a broken fingertip and will need a few days
off. He participated in baseball
activities and the Reds seem keen on avoiding the DL. Akinori Iwamura will miss the entire year with a torn ACL. Willy Aybar can play second and he did a
decent job filling in for Longoria last year.
Kelly Johnson is 6 for his last 14 ABs with 2 HRs. So far, the brief rest
SHORTSTOP
Jose
Reyes was finally placed on the disabled list.
None of his potential replacements are fantasy worthy, but recent call
up Fernando Martinez has a chance to make an impact in the outfield. J.J. Hardy missed several games with back
spasms. He's battled the issue before;
it's a fact of life for Hardy owners. Mike Aviles hit the DL due to a strained
forearm. If that's truly the case, maybe
a couple of weeks off can do him some good.
Jason Bartlett is on the 15-day DL with a sprained ankle. Ben Zobrist will pick up some extra playing
time and is worth consideration in mixed leagues.
THIRD
BASE
Joe
Crede has 4 HRs over the past 10 games, but exited Sunday night after he was
hit by a pitch on his hand. Crede doesn't
think a DL trip is necessary. Pablo
Sandoval will avoid the DL, but he will sit for a couple of games. Veteran Juan Uribe has performed admirably,
but shouldn't be acquired in mixed fantasy leagues.
OUTFIELD
The
Orioles will activate Luke Scott this week. He'll be the DH, so Felix Pie and Nolan Reimold should still see a
fair number of at bats. Juan Rivera
went 6 for 10 over the weekend bringing his average to .292. The Indians decided to send Matt LaPorta
down to AAA. He'll be back up, whether
Eric Wedge likes it or not. Josh
Hamilton sat out for a few games after tweaking his groin. He has 6 HRs on the season - keep an eye on the injury.
STARTING
PITCHER
A.J.
Burnett allowed 3 HRs vs. the Phillies on Saturday. His ERA now stands at 5.210 and it hasn't been below 5.00 since
April 19. It should trend down to the
4.50 level eventually. Barry Zito was
touched up for 5 runs during 6.1 innings of work on Sunday. He's pitched better than his 1-5 record
indicates, but owners can't trust him outside of very deep NL-only leagues,
RELIEF
PITCHER
Juan
Cruz gave up 4 earned runs in 0.1 IP, but bounced back 3 days later to notch a
save in St. Louis. Francisco Rodriguez
is still experiencing back issues, but is improving.
