CATCHER
Russell Martin actually might benefit from the Manny
Ramirez suspension. After Los Angeles
acquired Ramirez in 2008, Martin hit .246 and he was off to a horrible start
this year hitting only .205 in April.
He's now 5 for 8 since the suspension bringing his average to .273 -
coincidence to say the least. Brian
McCann returned and is using eyeglasses instead of contacts. He is 6 for 13 with a homerun and 4 RBI
after 3 games.
FIRST
BASE
Derrek
Lee missed a couple of games with a sore neck.
The Cubs haven't released many details, so owners need to keep on top of
this one. Micah Hoffpauir will get the
starting call while Lee is sidelined.
Joey Votto had the flu and was out of the lineup for a few days. He'll be back in action soon. Lance Berkman has sat out 3 games with a
sore wrist. The news is troubling and
you might see a DL trip if it doesn't improve soon.
SECOND
BASE
The
Marlins called up Chris Coghlan and sent Cameron Maybin to Triple-A. Coghlan was on fire in the minors and his
position versatility will provide him with plenty of opportunities to
play. Dustin Pedroia left Sunday's game
with a hurt groin. Oakland acquired
Adam Kennedy to help bolster their depleted infield. Just like teammate Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips had to take some
time off to get over the flu.
SHORTSTOP
Jack
Wilson and Stephen Drew are scheduled to come off the DL this week. Khalil Greene is back in the lineup and is 6
for 18 (.333) since his return. Erick
Aybar is also back in action posting a 3 for 5 effort over 2 games. His season
average stands at .309, but, as usual, offers nothing in the other offensive
categories. Alex Gonzalez continues to
be sidelined by a strained oblique.
THIRD
BASE
Aramis
Ramirez will miss 6-8 weeks with a separated shoulder. Mike Fontenot will get
the bulk of starts with newly acquired Ryan Freel also seeing time at third
base. Fontenot is best left for NL-only
leagues. Edwin Encarnacion had his cast
removed and is now in a splint. Backup
Adam Rosales is 9 for 36 (.250), since being called up. Alex Rodriguez reurned on Friday and
promptly hit a homerun on the first pitch he saw. A-Rod can make up for the lost time in a hurry.
OUTFIELD
Obviously,
Manny Ramirez's 50 game suspension was the hot topic in Week 5. Juan Pierre will receive the majority of
time, but is hardly a top-flight option.
He’ll have a nice average and rack up the steals, but his complete and
utter lack of power will come back to bite fantasy owners. In the short term, Ramirez will likely be
rusty for a few weeks upon his return.
However, his 37-year old frame will benefit from the time off and he'll
be full strength for the second half of the season. Coco Crisp is only batting .232 but his .360 OBP has allowed him
to score 22 runs. His worst season
average mark was .260, so it's hard to see him staying below the mediocre line
much longer. Daniel Murphy's mini
9-game streak was snapped on Saturday when he went 0-1 in a pinch-hit
appearance. If Jerry Manuel continues
to use Luis Castillo in the second spot of the lineup, Murphy's value will take
a big hit.
STARTING
PITCHER
After
a rough outing against Texas last week, Danks bounced back to strikeout 10
Rangers over 6 innings for a win. He'll
get the red-hot Blue Jays in his next start. Jorge De La Rosa struck out 11
batters in his last outing. He now
stands at 0-4, 3.53 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and he possess dominant strikeout ability,
but owners are still leery of his erratic performances. He has all the tools to contribute to mixed
fantasy leagues, so keep a close eye on him.
Chien-Ming Wang is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment. Apparently, he is progressing well, but
owners will need to keep him on the bench for a few starts until he proves his
health. Phil Hughes struggled after his
stellar season debut, so there will be no controversy when Wang returns.
RELIEF
PITCHER
Matt
Capps is on schedule to return this week.
He was very effective before the injury, so the time off will likely do
the trick. The Royals placed Joakim
Soria on the 15-day DL with a sore shoulder.
Juan Cruz figures to get a chance to assume the closer role while Soria
is out.
