After Jonathan Sanchez failed to pitch past 6 full innings
in his 4th straight start, the San Francisco Giants placed the struggling
southpaw on the DL with biceps tendinitis.
"There's nothing wrong with me. I'm fine. I'm healthy.
I'm just having a hard time getting the ball over the plate."
That was Sanchez before his last lackluster start.
Hmmmmmmmmm.
We all know this is a phony injury, but what could the
Giants do? They can't placed Sanchez on
the disabled list for "mental instability" - that's not exactly a
confidence booster. So biceps
tendinitis it is, while baseball observers quietly smirk.
Let's be clear - Jonathan Sanchez is a very talented
pitcher. He has a no-hitter under his
belt, and he posted 92 strikeouts in 89.2 innings this season. Lefties can't touch him, only sporting a
.179 batting average while right-handers are only hitting .229.
It's the league-leading 59 walks that cause red flags. His pitch count becomes too unwieldy and the
Giants are forced to tap their bullpen early and often in his starts.
Fantasy owners must follow the same course as the
Giants. Give Sanchez some rest on bench
and hope he turns it around when he comes back to action. His value is at a low point; so don't trade
him away for a six-pack and some shiny beads.
Any starting pitcher averaging over a strikeout an inning deserves a
longer leash to become a mixed league impact player.
