1. Robinson Cano - NYY
Cano proved 2009’s power campaign wasn’t a fluke by
increasing his totals to 29 HRs and 109 RBI last year. He turned in career-highs across the board
in 2010 and deserves a look in the early rounds of mixed league drafts.
2. Dustin Pedroia - BOS
Pedroia was off to a tremendous start in 2010 before a
broken foot ended his season at 75 games.
He has very healthy during Spring Training and has a good chance to
increase his career highs in production.
3. Ian Kinsler - TEX
We all know the story on Kinsler by now. If he were to play a full season, he would
be one of the most valuable fantasy commodities in the league. But, when you see the myriad of injuries he
has undergone, owners have realized it might not be possible. He should be ranked among the top-5 second
basemen - just draft a worthy backup.
4. Chase Utley - PHI
Most owners are legitimately worried about Chase Utley’s
knee injury. We all hope it’s just a
precaution, but we already conceded that all of the signs we are receiving
point to a D.L. trip to begin the season.
All we can do is wait and see if any more pertinent news starts to be
released.
5. Dan Uggla - ATL
Of course, Uggla’s .287 batting average looks a little
out-of-place compared to the previous few seasons, but that’s not why you draft
him. Uggla holds down the second base
spot for his 30-HR & 90 RBI power potential, so just be happy if he can hit
.260 in his new Atlanta surroundings.
6. Brandon Phillips - CIN
Phillips’ 18 HRs and .275 average were fine, but the 59 RBI
total was his worst mark over the past 5 years. He did manage to steal 16 bases, but he was thrown out 12 times
for a miserable 57% success rate.
Despite the down year, Phillips still has plenty of potential for
another 20-20 season with 15-15 as the floor.
7. Rickie Weeks – MIL
Weeks finally played in 160 games and delivered on all of
that potential. He knocked out 29 HRs
while managing to keep his average is respectable territory - .269. If he stays healthy enough to play in
another 150 games, expect strong production, but that the question – “Will he
get hurt again?”
8. Kelly Johnson - ARI
Johnson posted a solid .284-26-71-13 line in his first
season in Arizona. A second baseman
with a legit shot to repeat the 20-HR mark is hard to come by, so don’t take
Johnson lightly since another similar season might propel him into top-5
territory.
9. Martin Prado - ATL
Solid, not spectacular.
If he can hit another 15 HRs while maintaining a .300 average, then we
would be satisfied. We like his versatility
qualifying at both 2B and 3B because he can be a solid fantasy swingman. Just don’t expect a gigantic increase in
production.
10. Chone Figgins - SEA
Seattle’s big free agent signing didn’t exactly ring in a
new era for the Mariners. He hit .259
and his only value came in the way of 42 stolen bases. The team should struggle putting runs on the
board again this year, so proceed with caution.
